Középfülön is a Hungarian term that translates to "middle ear" in English. The middle ear is an air-filled cavity in the temporal bone of the skull, located between the outer ear and the inner ear. It plays a crucial role in the process of hearing by transmitting sound vibrations from the outer ear to the inner ear.

The middle ear is separated from the outer ear by the tympanic membrane, commonly known as the eardrum. When sound waves reach the eardrum, they cause it to vibrate. These vibrations are then amplified and transmitted to the inner ear through a chain of three tiny bones called ossicles: the malleus (hammer), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrup). The malleus is attached to the eardrum, the incus connects the malleus to the stapes, and the stapes is attached to the oval window, an opening that leads to the inner ear.

The middle ear also contains the Eustachian tube, a narrow passage that connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx, the upper part of the throat. The Eustachian tube's primary function is to equalize the air pressure in the middle ear with the external air pressure. This pressure equalization is essential for the eardrum to vibrate efficiently and for proper hearing. Conditions affecting the middle ear, such as otitis media (middle ear infection), can lead to temporary or permanent hearing loss due to inflammation, fluid buildup, or damage to the ossicles.
