Kõridega is a term used in Estonian to refer to the larynx, also commonly known as the voice box. This complex cartilaginous structure is located in the neck, at the top of the trachea (windpipe) and anterior to the esophagus. Its primary functions are to protect the trachea from food and foreign objects, and to produce sound, which is essential for speech.

The larynx is composed of several cartilages, including the thyroid cartilage (Adam's apple), the cricoid cartilage, and the epiglottis. Within the larynx are the vocal folds, also called vocal cords. These are two folds of mucous membrane that contain elastic tissue and muscles. When air is expelled from the lungs, it passes over the vocal folds, causing them to vibrate and produce sound. The pitch and volume of this sound can be altered by adjusting the tension and position of the vocal folds, as well as the airflow from the lungs.

In addition to its role in voice production, the larynx plays a crucial part in breathing and swallowing. During swallowing, the epiglottis, a flap of cartilage, covers the opening of the larynx, preventing food and liquid from entering the airway. Inflammation of the larynx is called laryngitis, which can cause hoarseness, loss of voice, and difficulty breathing.
