The production of speech involves several stages. First, conceptualization and formulation generate the intended message. This is followed by grammatical encoding, where words are selected and arranged according to the rules of syntax. Finally, phonological encoding and articulation translate the linguistic message into a sequence of motor commands that control the vocal tract, producing the audible sounds. Speech comprehension, conversely, involves auditory processing of the incoming sound waves. This is followed by phonological decoding, recognizing the individual sounds that make up words. Lexical access identifies the meaning of these words, and syntactic and semantic analysis combines them to understand the overall meaning of the utterance. This process also relies heavily on brain regions involved in auditory processing and language comprehension.
