Kärnkraftsreaktorn, often translated as nuclear reactor, is a device used to initiate and control a sustained nuclear chain reaction. The primary purpose of most nuclear reactors is to generate electricity, although some are used for research or to produce isotopes for medical and industrial uses. The fundamental principle involves the fission of heavy atomic nuclei, typically uranium or plutonium. When a neutron strikes a fissile atom, it can cause the nucleus to split, releasing a significant amount of energy in the form of heat and more neutrons. These newly released neutrons can then go on to strike other fissile atoms, creating a chain reaction.

Control mechanisms are essential to prevent the chain reaction from becoming uncontrolled. Control rods, typically made of neutron-absorbing materials like cadmium or boron, are inserted into or withdrawn from the reactor core to regulate the number of neutrons available to sustain the reaction. The heat generated by fission is used to heat a coolant, most commonly water, which then flows to a steam generator. This steam drives turbines connected to generators, producing electricity. Safety systems are a paramount consideration in nuclear reactor design, incorporating multiple layers of redundancy and containment structures to prevent the release of radioactive materials. Different types of reactors exist, varying in their coolant, moderator, and fuel.
