Kylvärmekretsar, often translated as refrigeration cycles or heat pump cycles, are thermodynamic systems designed to transfer heat from a colder location to a warmer one, or vice versa. These cycles are fundamental to many modern technologies, including refrigerators, air conditioners, and heat pumps. The core principle involves the use of a working fluid, or refrigerant, that undergoes a series of phase changes and pressure variations.

A typical vapor-compression refrigeration cycle, the most common type, involves four main components: an evaporator, a compressor, a condenser, and an expansion valve. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the cold space in the evaporator, causing it to vaporize. This vapor then enters the compressor, where its pressure and temperature are significantly increased. The high-pressure, high-temperature vapor then flows to the condenser, where it releases heat to the warmer environment and condenses back into a liquid. Finally, the high-pressure liquid passes through the expansion valve, where its pressure and temperature drop dramatically, preparing it to re-enter the evaporator and repeat the cycle.

Refrigeration cycles are characterized by their Coefficient of Performance (COP) for cooling and heating. A higher COP indicates greater efficiency, meaning more heat is transferred for a given amount of energy input. The specific design and refrigerant choice depend on the intended application and operating conditions.
