kylkiluista
Kylkiluista refers to the ribs, which are a series of curved bones in the chest of most vertebrates that form the rib cage. They are crucial for protecting the vital organs within the thorax, such as the heart and lungs, and also play a role in respiration by expanding and contracting with the diaphragm. In humans, there are typically twelve pairs of ribs, though variations can occur. The upper seven pairs are known as true ribs because they attach directly to the sternum via their own costal cartilage. The next three pairs are false ribs, which connect to the sternum indirectly by attaching to the cartilage of the rib above. The final two pairs are floating ribs, as they do not attach to the sternum at all. The structure of ribs can vary between species, adapted to their specific needs and locomotion. Injuries to the ribs, such as fractures, can be very painful and may impair breathing.
