Kvantifitseerimises refers to the process of converting analog signals into digital form. The core of quantization involves sampling and then assigning discrete numerical values to the sampled amplitude of the analog signal.

The process begins with sampling, where the analog signal's amplitude is measured at regular intervals in time. The frequency of these measurements is known as the sampling rate. After sampling, each sample is then quantized. Quantization assigns each sampled value to one of a finite number of discrete levels. The number of these levels is determined by the bit depth of the digital representation. A higher bit depth allows for more quantization levels, resulting in a more accurate representation of the original analog signal and less quantization error.

Quantization error, also known as quantization noise, is the difference between the original analog amplitude and its quantized digital value. This error is inherent in the process and cannot be entirely eliminated, but it can be minimized by using a higher bit depth and appropriate quantization techniques. The resulting stream of discrete numerical values can then be stored, processed, and transmitted as digital data.
