A kuvausfunktio, often translated as a mapping function or characteristic function in English, is a concept primarily used in set theory and abstract algebra. It describes a relationship between elements of two sets, or between elements within a single set. Essentially, a kuvausfunktio specifies how each element from a source set is associated with an element in a target set.

In simpler terms, if we have a set A and a set B, a kuvausfunktio f from A to B assigns to every element x in A exactly one element y in B. This association is often represented as f(x) = y. The set A is called the domain of the function, and the set B is called the codomain. The set of all actual output values, {f(x) | x ∈ A}, is known as the range or image of the function.
