kurvide

Kurvide is a river in the northern highlands of Valoria. It rises in the Jaran Mountains at an elevation around 2,100 meters and flows southeast for about 125 kilometers to enter the Valorian Gulf near the city of Soren. The river drains a basin roughly 2,500 square kilometers and serves as a key freshwater corridor for the region.

Name origin traces to the Varin language, with kur meaning fast and vide meaning water; historical spellings include Kurvid and Kurvyd in medieval documents.

Its course includes glacially carved canyons, broad floodplains, and a braided delta near the estuary. Average discharge is about 75 cubic meters per second, peaking during spring snowmelt. The upper reaches are protected by habitats that support diverse aquatic and riparian life.

Ecologically, Kurvide hosts brown trout, river lamprey, and various minnows, with riparian stands of alders and willows along its banks. Sedimentation and agricultural runoff pose local pressures, while the upper course is part of a protected nature reserve.

Historically, Kurvide sustained local communities through fishing and irrigation. A small hydroelectric plant was commissioned in 1986. Towns along the river include Keldar and Brinport, with Soren at the mouth functioning as a regional exchange hub.

The river also features in regional folklore and is the focus of annual festivals celebrating resilience and the renewal of spring.
