Kupéfilter, also referred to as a cabin air filter or passenger compartment filter, is a component in motor vehicles designed to clean the air that enters the interior through the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. It is typically located behind the glove box, under the dashboard, or in the engine compartment, depending on the vehicle model. Its main function is to reduce dust, pollen, exhaust particles, and odors from the outside air before it circulates inside the cabin.

Most kupéfilters use pleated media made from paper or synthetic fibers, and many include an activated carbon layer to adsorb odors and some gaseous pollutants. Some variants also incorporate antimicrobial coatings. The filter’s effectiveness depends on its design, material quality, and surface area. Higher-efficiency variants, such as those with activated carbon or premium multi-layer media, offer greater filtration but may have higher replacement costs.

Common types include standard cabin filters, activated carbon cabin filters, and combination filters that target both particles and odors. Some vehicles use a design that allows a simple snap-in replacement, while others require removal of components or panels to access the filter housing.

Replacement and maintenance are important for air quality and HVAC performance. Filters are typically changed every 12,000–30,000 kilometers (8,000–20,000 miles) or roughly once a year, though harsh environments, heavy traffic, and allergy sensitivity may necessitate more frequent changes. Signs that a filter needs replacement include reduced airflow, unusual smells, or increased nasal or ocular irritation when the HVAC system runs. Regular replacement helps maintain cabin air quality and HVAC efficiency.
