Kuluttajahintaindeksi (KHI), commonly known as the consumer price index (CPI) in English, is a statistical measure that tracks the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. This basket includes a wide range of items such as food, housing, clothing, transportation, medical care, and recreation.

The purpose of the consumer price index is to reflect the cost of living for a typical household. It is calculated by collecting price data for a fixed set of goods and services at regular intervals. These prices are then weighted according to their importance in the average consumer's budget. The resulting index allows for the comparison of price levels over different periods, indicating whether inflation or deflation is occurring.
