These emissions are a significant contributor to global climate change and air pollution. The primary sources of transport emissions include:

1. Road transport: This includes emissions from cars, trucks, buses, and motorcycles. The main pollutants are carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM).

2. Rail transport: Emissions from trains are primarily CO2 and NOx. However, rail transport is generally more energy-efficient than road transport, resulting in lower emissions per unit of freight or passenger transported.

3. Air transport: Aircraft emissions consist mainly of CO2, NOx, and water vapor. The aviation industry is a significant contributor to global warming due to the high altitude at which aircraft fly, where the air is thinner and less able to disperse pollutants.

4. Maritime transport: Ship emissions include CO2, SOx (sulfur oxides), NOx, and PM. The maritime industry is a major source of air pollution near ports and coastal areas.

5. Pipeline transport: Emissions from pipelines are generally low, as they transport liquids and gases without the need for combustion. However, leaks and maintenance activities can still result in emissions.

To mitigate transport emissions, various strategies can be employed, such as improving fuel efficiency, promoting the use of low-emission vehicles, encouraging modal shifts (e.g., from road to rail), and developing alternative fuels like hydrogen and electricity. International agreements and regulations, such as the Paris Agreement and the International Maritime Organization's sulfur cap, also play a crucial role in reducing transport emissions.
