Kuivaputkijärjestelmät, also known as dry pipe sprinkler systems, are a type of fire suppression system. Unlike wet pipe systems that constantly hold water in the pipes, dry pipe systems have air or nitrogen under pressure in the pipes. This pressurized gas keeps a valve closed, preventing water from entering the piping network until a fire occurs.

When a sprinkler head is activated by heat, the air pressure within that section of the piping drops. This pressure drop causes the dry pipe valve to open, allowing water to flow into the system and out of the activated sprinkler head. The delay in water delivery is the primary characteristic of a dry pipe system.

These systems are typically installed in environments where freezing temperatures are a concern and the risk of water damage from a latent leak is undesirable. Examples include unheated warehouses, parking garages, and attics. The use of pressurized air or nitrogen helps prevent the water from freezing and damaging the sprinkler pipes in cold conditions. While offering protection against freezing, the slight delay in water discharge means they are not ideal for environments where immediate suppression of rapidly developing fires is critical.
