Krystalens is the name used for a line of accommodating intraocular lenses (IOLs) designed to replace the eye’s natural lens during cataract surgery. In many markets, the device is better known as Crystalens, with Krystalens reflecting a variant spelling encountered in some regions. The goal of these lenses is to restore a broader range of vision and reduce dependence on spectacles by providing both distance and near focus through the eye’s natural focusing mechanism.

Designed with an optic connected to flexible haptics, the lens uses the ciliary muscle to move the optic axially as the eye focuses. This accommodative mechanism aims to simulate natural accommodation, unlike conventional monofocal IOLs that provide a fixed focus.

Implantation occurs during cataract surgery via phacoemulsification. The foldable lens is inserted through a small corneal incision and positioned in the capsular bag. Over time, capsule changes can influence performance, and results may vary among individuals.

Clinical outcomes vary. Some patients achieve meaningful improvement in near vision without glasses, while others still rely on glasses for reading. Complications are similar to those associated with other IOLs and can include posterior capsule opacification, lens decentration, glare, or dysphotopsia; long-term stability remains an area of study.

Variants in the Krystalens/Crystalens family include successive generations marketed with improvements to optics and placement. Their use depends on patient factors such as baseline corneal astigmatism, ocular surface health, and preference for spectacle independence.
