Metallic crystals feature a lattice of metal atoms where valence electrons are delocalized, forming a "sea" of electrons that binds the positively charged ions. Covalent network solids exhibit a lattice where atoms are connected by strong covalent bonds, forming a continuous network. Molecular crystals are composed of discrete molecules held together by weaker intermolecular forces like van der Waals forces or hydrogen bonds.

The specific arrangement of particles within the lattice, known as the crystal structure, dictates many of the material's physical properties, including its melting point, hardness, electrical conductivity, and optical characteristics. For example, the close-packed structures of metals contribute to their malleability and ductility, while the rigid covalent network of diamond makes it exceptionally hard.
