Konstituentsträd, also known as constituent trees or parse trees, are a hierarchical representation used in linguistics and computer science to illustrate the syntactic structure of a sentence. They visually break down a sentence into its constituent parts, showing how words group together to form phrases and how these phrases combine to form larger structures until the entire sentence is accounted for. The fundamental idea is that a sentence is not just a linear sequence of words but is organized in nested layers.

Each node in a constituent tree represents a syntactic category. The leaves of the tree are the individual words of the sentence, also known as terminal nodes. Internal nodes represent non-terminal categories, such as noun phrases (NP), verb phrases (VP), prepositional phrases (PP), or sentence (S). The relationships between nodes indicate grammatical dependencies. For instance, a noun phrase might be a constituent of a sentence, and within that noun phrase, a determiner and a noun might be constituents of the noun phrase itself.

The process of creating a constituent tree is called parsing. Different parsing algorithms exist, ranging from simple rule-based systems to more complex statistical and neural network approaches. Constituent trees are valuable tools for understanding sentence structure, enabling tasks like machine translation, information extraction, and natural language understanding. They provide a formal way to model grammatical rules and identify potential ambiguities in sentence interpretation. By visualizing the hierarchical relationships, linguists and computer scientists can gain deeper insights into how meaning is conveyed through grammatical structure.
