Kompressorjahutus, also known as vapor-compression refrigeration, is the most common type of refrigeration system. It relies on a thermodynamic cycle to transfer heat from a colder space to a warmer environment. The core of the system is a refrigerant, a substance that easily changes between liquid and gas states at specific temperatures and pressures.

The cycle begins with the compressor, which increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant in its gaseous state. This hot, high-pressure gas then flows into the condenser, typically located outside the refrigerated space. Here, the refrigerant releases its heat to the surroundings and condenses into a high-pressure liquid. The liquid refrigerant then passes through an expansion valve, which significantly reduces its pressure and temperature. This cold, low-pressure liquid then enters the evaporator, usually located inside the refrigerated space. As the refrigerant absorbs heat from the surrounding air or contents, it evaporates back into a low-pressure gas. This cooled gas is then drawn back into the compressor, and the cycle repeats.

This continuous process effectively removes heat from the desired area, maintaining a lower temperature.
