Kolloïdsystemen, also known as colloidal systems or colloids, are mixtures where one substance of extremely fine particles is dispersed evenly throughout another substance. The dispersed particles have a size ranging from approximately 1 nanometer to 1 micrometer. These particles are larger than individual atoms or molecules in a true solution, but too small to be seen with the naked eye or even a standard optical microscope.

Unlike suspensions, where larger particles settle out over time, the particles in a colloidal system remain dispersed due to Brownian motion and electrostatic repulsion. Brownian motion refers to the random movement of the dispersed particles caused by collisions with the molecules of the surrounding medium. Electrostatic repulsion arises from the fact that many colloidal particles carry a surface charge, which prevents them from aggregating.

Colloidal systems are classified based on the state of matter of the dispersed phase and the dispersion medium. Common types include sols (solid dispersed in liquid, like milk), gels (liquid dispersed in solid, like jelly), emulsions (liquid dispersed in liquid, like mayonnaise), aerosols (solid or liquid dispersed in gas, like smoke or fog), and foams (gas dispersed in liquid or solid, like whipped cream or Styrofoam).

The properties of colloidal systems are distinct from those of true solutions and suspensions. For instance, colloids exhibit the Tyndall effect, where a beam of light passing through the system becomes visible due to scattering by the dispersed particles. This phenomenon is not observed in true solutions. Colloidal systems have significant applications in various fields, including food science, medicine, manufacturing, and environmental science, playing roles in everything from blood clotting to paint formulation.
