Kollateralligament refers to a group of ligaments located on the sides of a joint. The term is derived from the Latin word "collateral," meaning "side by side." These ligaments play a crucial role in stabilizing the joint and preventing excessive sideways movement.

The knee joint contains two primary collateral ligaments: the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the lateral collateral ligament (LCL). The MCL is situated on the inner side of the knee, while the LCL is on the outer side. These ligaments resist valgus (inward bending) and varus (outward bending) forces, respectively, which can occur during athletic activities or trauma. Damage to these ligaments, often referred to as a sprain, can range in severity from mild stretching to complete tears.

Other joints also possess collateral ligaments. For example, the elbow has a ulnar collateral ligament and a radial collateral ligament, which contribute to the stability of the elbow joint, particularly during rotational movements and resisting forces that could cause the forearm to deviate from the upper arm.

Injuries to collateral ligaments are typically caused by direct blows to the joint or by sudden twisting motions. Symptoms can include pain, swelling, tenderness, and instability. Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination and may be confirmed with imaging studies such as an MRI. Treatment depends on the severity of the injury and may involve rest, ice, compression, elevation, bracing, physical therapy, or surgery in severe cases.
