Keuhkotilan refers to the pleural space, the potential space between the two layers of pleura that surround the lungs. The pleura are two thin membranes; the visceral pleura covers the surface of the lungs, and the parietal pleura lines the inner surface of the chest wall, diaphragm, and mediastinum. Normally, only a small amount of pleural fluid is present in the keuhkotilan, acting as a lubricant to allow smooth movement of the lungs during breathing. This fluid reduces friction between the pleural layers.

When an abnormal amount of fluid accumulates in the keuhkotilan, it is called pleural effusion. This can be caused by various conditions, including heart failure, pneumonia, kidney disease, and certain cancers. The excess fluid can compress the lung, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, and cough. Diagnosis often involves imaging techniques like chest X-rays or ultrasounds, and the fluid may be analyzed to determine its cause. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying condition and, if necessary, removing the excess fluid through a procedure called thoracentesis.

In some cases, air can accumulate in the keuhkotilan, a condition known as pneumothorax. This can cause the lung to collapse, leading to sudden chest pain and difficulty breathing. Pneumothorax can occur spontaneously or as a result of injury or medical procedures. Treatment typically involves removing the air from the pleural space to allow the lung to re-expand.
