Keskkõrvatuli, also known as otitis media, is an infection of the middle ear. It is a common condition, particularly in children, and can be caused by bacteria or viruses. The infection typically develops after a cold or upper respiratory infection, as swelling in the nasal passages can block the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat. This blockage prevents fluid from draining properly, creating a breeding ground for pathogens.

Symptoms of middle ear infection can include ear pain, a feeling of fullness in the ear, difficulty hearing, fever, and sometimes a discharge from the ear. In young children, symptoms may also include irritability, difficulty sleeping, and tugging at the ear. While most ear infections resolve on their own within a few days, some may require antibiotic treatment.

Diagnosis is usually made based on a physical examination of the ear using an otoscope. If an infection is confirmed, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics, pain relievers, or ear drops. Preventing ear infections involves good hygiene, avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke, and ensuring children are up-to-date on their vaccinations. In recurrent cases, a doctor might recommend ear tubes to help with drainage and ventilation.
