Kernefysik, also known as nuclear physics, is the subfield of physics that studies atomic nuclei. It investigates the composition of atomic nuclei, the forces that hold them together, and the processes by which they transform. The primary constituents of atomic nuclei are protons and neutrons, collectively referred to as nucleons.

The strong nuclear force is the fundamental interaction responsible for binding protons and neutrons within the nucleus, overcoming the electrostatic repulsion between the positively charged protons. This force is incredibly strong but has a very short range, acting only within the nucleus.

Key phenomena studied in kernefysik include radioactivity, which is the spontaneous emission of radiation from unstable atomic nuclei, and nuclear reactions, such as fission and fusion. Nuclear fission involves the splitting of a heavy nucleus into lighter ones, releasing a significant amount of energy. Nuclear fusion, conversely, is the process where light nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, also releasing vast amounts of energy, as observed in stars.

Applications of kernefysik are widespread, ranging from nuclear power generation and medical imaging techniques like PET scans to the development of nuclear weapons and the dating of ancient artifacts using radiocarbon dating. Understanding the behavior of atomic nuclei is crucial for advancements in numerous scientific and technological fields.
