These cells are responsible for producing keratin, a tough and fibrous protein that forms the protective outer layer of the skin, hair, and nails. Keratinocytes originate in the basal layer of the epidermis and undergo a process of differentiation as they move towards the surface. During this journey, they accumulate keratin and eventually flatten and die, forming the stratum corneum, the protective barrier of the skin.
