Katecholaminok are a group of monoamine compounds that function as hormones and neurotransmitters. They are synthesized from the amino acid tyrosine. The primary catecholamines in the body are epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and dopamine. These substances play crucial roles in the body's "fight-or-flight" response, regulating heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism, and alertness.

Epinephrine and norepinephrine are released by the adrenal medulla and nerve endings, respectively. They bind to adrenergic receptors, triggering a cascade of physiological effects designed to prepare the body for immediate action. Dopamine, on the other hand, is involved in reward pathways, motivation, and motor control. Deficiencies or imbalances in dopamine are implicated in conditions like Parkinson's disease and addiction.

The synthesis of catecholamines involves a series of enzymatic steps. Tyrosine is first converted to L-DOPA, which is then decarboxylated to dopamine. Dopamine can be further hydroxylated to norepinephrine, and norepinephrine can be methylated to epinephrine. These neurotransmitters are eventually broken down by enzymes like monoamine oxidase (MAO) and catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), and their byproducts are excreted. The study of catecholamines is fundamental to understanding neurobiology, endocrinology, and pharmacology, as many medications target these pathways.
