Each step in the chain involves comparing a measuring instrument to a reference standard of higher accuracy. This reference standard, in turn, is calibrated against another standard of even higher accuracy, and so on, until the ultimate reference standard is reached.

The highest level of the calibration chain typically leads to a national metrology institute (NMI) or an international standard, such as those maintained by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). The concept of traceability is central to metrology, the science of measurement. It provides confidence in the reliability of measurements used in various fields, including science, industry, trade, and health. Without a proper calibration chain, it would be difficult to verify the quality of products, ensure fair trade, or conduct reliable scientific research.

In practice, a calibration certificate issued for an instrument will often state its traceability to national or international standards.
