Kaitsekiht, or protective layer, is a surface layer designed to shield a material from damage or alter its properties. It can prevent corrosion, reduce wear, insulate, or provide a barrier against chemicals, moisture, UV radiation, or temperature changes.

Protective layers are common across industries. In construction and transportation, coatings guard steel and concrete. In electronics, passivation layers protect circuitry. In optics, anti-reflective or protective coatings improve performance.

Common materials and forms include metallic coatings such as zinc or chromium plating, polymer-based paints and sealants (epoxy, polyurethane), ceramic or glassy coatings, and naturally forming oxide layers that are part of the substrate (for example, aluminum oxide on aluminum).

Formation methods include electroplating or galvanizing, diffusion and anodizing, thermal spraying, chemical or physical vapor deposition, and simple painting or sealing. Some coatings are engineered for self-healing or long-term durability under challenging environments.

Quality considerations include adhesion to the substrate, thickness control, and impermeability. Durability depends on substrate compatibility, environmental exposure, and coating integrity. Standards such as ISO 12944 guide corrosion protection practices, including coating selection and testing.

Examples include galvanization of steel to provide sacrificial protection against corrosion; aluminum’s natural oxide layer that resists further oxidation; and protective coatings on pipelines and bridges that extend service life.
