The Kainai, also known as the Blood Tribe, are a First Nations people in Canada. The name Kainai is their autonym and is often translated as “many chiefs.” They are one of the four bands of the Blackfoot Confederacy, which also includes the Siksika (Blackfoot), Piikani (Peigan), and the Blackfeet of Montana.

They are based in southern Alberta on the Blood Reserve near Cardston, in the region historically associated with the Plains buffalo-hunters. The Kainai were among the signatories of Treaty 7 with Canada in 1877, with Red Crow and other leaders representing the nation. The treaty marked a shift to reserve life and a new political framework under Canadian law, while many traditional practices continued alongside modernization.

Language and culture: The Kainai speak Blackfoot, in the Kainai (Southern Blackfoot) dialect, which is part of the Algonquian language family. Today, the community conducts language revitalization programs and immersion efforts to sustain the language. Cultural expressions include traditional beadwork and regalia, storytelling, and ceremonial practices that maintain ties to the Plains Indigenous heritage.

Modern governance and economy: The Kainai Nation is governed by a chief and council under the Indian Act. The reserve provides education, health, and social-services programs, and the Nation pursues economic development in agriculture, energy, and tourism, while working to preserve language and cultural heritage for future generations.
