Jäähdytyslaite, commonly known in English as a refrigeration unit or cooler, is a device used to reduce and maintain the temperature of a space or substance below ambient temperature. This is achieved through a thermodynamic cycle that transfers heat from a colder location to a warmer one.

The most common type of refrigeration unit utilizes a vapor-compression cycle. This cycle involves a refrigerant fluid that circulates through a closed system. The refrigerant absorbs heat in the evaporator, where it changes from a liquid to a gas. The gaseous refrigerant then moves to the compressor, which increases its pressure and temperature. Subsequently, the hot, high-pressure gas flows to the condenser, where it releases heat to the surroundings and turns back into a liquid. Finally, the liquid refrigerant passes through an expansion valve, which reduces its pressure and temperature, allowing it to return to the evaporator and repeat the cycle.

Refrigeration units are found in a wide array of applications, from domestic refrigerators and freezers that preserve food to industrial chillers used in manufacturing processes, air conditioning systems that cool buildings, and specialized equipment for scientific research and medical purposes. The efficiency and capacity of a refrigeration unit vary greatly depending on its design and intended use. Proper maintenance, such as cleaning condenser coils and ensuring adequate ventilation, is crucial for optimal performance and longevity.
