Jäähdytyskeskukset, or district cooling centers, are facilities that provide chilled water to multiple buildings within a defined area. This chilled water is then used by individual buildings for air conditioning and other cooling purposes. Instead of each building having its own, often inefficient, cooling system, a central plant produces chilled water in a more energy-efficient manner. This central production can take advantage of economies of scale and more advanced technologies.

The chilled water is distributed through a network of insulated underground pipes to the connected buildings. These buildings then use heat exchangers to transfer the cooling capacity from the district cooling water to their own internal cooling circuits. This system is particularly beneficial in densely populated urban areas or large industrial complexes where the demand for cooling is significant.

The advantages of district cooling include improved energy efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and lower maintenance costs for individual building owners. Centralized plants can be designed to utilize various energy sources, including waste heat from industrial processes or power generation, or even renewable energy sources, further enhancing their sustainability.
