Järjestyssuhde is a Finnish term that translates to "order relation" or "ordering relation" in English. It refers to a binary relation on a set that satisfies certain properties, allowing elements of the set to be compared or ranked. In mathematics and computer science, an order relation is fundamental for establishing structure and performing operations that rely on comparisons.

A relation R on a set A is considered an order relation if it is reflexive, antisymmetric, and transitive. Reflexivity means that every element in the set is related to itself (a R a). Antisymmetry implies that if two distinct elements are related in both directions, then they must be the same element (if a R b and b R a, then a = b). Transitivity states that if an element is related to a second, and that second element is related to a third, then the first element is also related to the third (if a R b and b R c, then a R c).

There are different types of order relations. A strict order relation is irreflexive (no element is related to itself) and satisfies transitivity. A partial order relation allows for elements that are not comparable (e.g., in a set of sets, one set might not be a subset of another, nor vice versa). A total order relation, also known as a linear order relation, is a partial order where every pair of elements is comparable. This means that for any two elements a and b in the set, either a R b or b R a. Examples of total order relations include the standard ordering of integers or real numbers.
