Jälkiväriksi is a Finnish term that translates to "as a later color" or "as a subsequent color." It refers to the phenomenon where colors appear to change or shift after an initial visual stimulus. This often occurs due to the physiological processes of the eye and brain, particularly the concept of afterimages.

When one stares at a brightly colored object for a prolonged period and then shifts their gaze to a neutral surface, such as white or gray, a complementary color may briefly appear. This is known as a negative afterimage. For example, staring at a red object might result in seeing a green afterimage. Jälkiväriksi encompasses this effect, where the perceived color is a consequence of the preceding visual experience.

The underlying mechanism involves the adaptation of photoreceptor cells in the retina. Prolonged stimulation of certain cone cells leads to their temporary fatigue. When the stimulus is removed, the less fatigued cone cells respond more strongly, leading to the perception of the complementary color.
