Jälkikatarakta, also known as posterior capsular opacification (PCO), is a common complication that can occur after cataract surgery. It happens when the normally clear membrane that holds the artificial intraocular lens (IOL) becomes cloudy. This membrane, the posterior capsule, is intentionally left in place during cataract surgery to support the IOL.

Over time, cells can grow on the posterior capsule, causing it to thicken and become opaque. This clouding obstructs vision, leading to symptoms similar to those experienced before cataract surgery, such as blurred or distorted vision, glare, and difficulty seeing in low light. The onset of jälkikatarakta can vary, often appearing months or even years after the initial procedure.

Diagnosis of jälkikatarakta is typically made through a routine eye examination. The treatment for this condition is straightforward and highly effective. A procedure called a YAG laser capsulotomy is performed, which uses a specialized laser to create a small opening in the cloudy posterior capsule.
