Jartestillä is a term originating from Finnish that translates to "jar test" in English. It refers to a common laboratory procedure used in water treatment and wastewater management to determine the optimal dosage of coagulants and flocculants. The primary goal of a jartestillä is to identify the chemical combination that effectively removes suspended solids and turbidity from water.

During a jartestillä, multiple beakers or jars are prepared, each containing a sample of the water to be treated. Different dosages of coagulant, such as alum or ferric chloride, are added to each jar. After a short mixing period to allow for the formation of small particles called flocs, a flocculant, if used, may be added to further aggregate these particles. The jars are then left to settle for a designated period.

Following the settling phase, the clarity of the water in each jar is visually assessed. The jar that exhibits the clearest water, indicating the most efficient removal of suspended matter, is identified. The dosage of coagulant and flocculant used in that particular jar is then considered the optimal dosage for treating the larger volume of water. This empirical method is crucial for cost-effective and efficient water purification processes.
