Izomersség is a term used in chemistry to describe the phenomenon where two or more chemical compounds have the same molecular formula but different structural formulas. These compounds are known as isomers. The difference in structure leads to distinct physical and chemical properties, even though the number and type of atoms are identical.

There are several types of isomerism. Structural isomerism, also known as constitutional isomerism, involves differences in the connectivity of atoms. This can include chain isomerism, where the carbon skeleton differs; positional isomerism, where the position of a functional group on the carbon chain varies; and functional isomerism, where compounds have the same molecular formula but different functional groups.

Stereoisomerism, on the other hand, involves compounds with the same molecular and structural formulas but a different spatial arrangement of atoms. This category includes enantiomers, which are non-superimposable mirror images of each other, and diastereomers, which are stereoisomers that are not mirror images. Geometric isomerism, a subtype of diastereomerism, occurs in compounds with restricted rotation, such as alkenes, where substituents can be on the same side (cis) or opposite sides (trans) of the double bond.

The concept of isomerism is fundamental to understanding the diversity of chemical substances and their behaviors. The subtle differences in structure can significantly impact a molecule's reactivity, melting point, boiling point, solubility, and biological activity. Therefore, identifying and distinguishing between isomers is crucial in fields ranging from organic synthesis and materials science to pharmacology and biochemistry.
