Isotsyanattien is the Finnish word for isocyanates. Isocyanates are a group of highly reactive chemical compounds characterized by the functional group -N=C=O. This functional group makes them very versatile in chemical synthesis, particularly in the production of polymers.

The most common and industrially significant isocyanates are aromatic diisocyanates such as toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). Aliphatic isocyanates, like hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), are also important.

The primary application of isocyanates is in the manufacture of polyurethanes. The reaction between an isocyanate and a polyol is the core chemical process for creating polyurethanes.

Isocyanates are known for their toxicity and reactivity. They are potent respiratory irritants and sensitizers, meaning that repeated exposure can lead to asthma-like symptoms. Therefore, strict safety precautions are necessary when handling these chemicals, including proper ventilation and personal protective equipment. Occupational exposure limits are established in many countries to protect workers.
