Another type is stereoisomerization, where the connectivity of atoms remains the same, but the spatial arrangement of atoms differs. This includes cis-trans isomerism and enantiomerism.

Isomerizations are important in various fields of chemistry, including organic chemistry, biochemistry, and industrial processes. In organic synthesis, isomerization can be used to produce desired isomers or to modify the properties of a compound. In biochemistry, many metabolic processes involve enzymatic isomerization reactions, such as the conversion of glucose to fructose in glycolysis. In the petroleum industry, isomerization is used to convert straight-chain alkanes into branched-chain alkanes, which have higher octane ratings and are therefore more suitable for use as gasoline. Catalysts, such as acids or metal complexes, are often employed to accelerate isomerization reactions.
