Isoelectronicity is a concept in chemistry and physics that describes atoms, ions, or molecules that have the same number of electrons and the same electron configuration. When species are isoelectronic, their chemical properties can be similar, although not identical, due to the shared electron count and arrangement. This similarity arises because the electron cloud, which dictates much of an atom's or molecule's behavior, is essentially the same.

The most common application of isoelectronic series is in the comparison of ions. For example, O2-, F-, and Ne are isoelectronic because they all possess 10 electrons. The oxide ion (O2-) has 8 protons and 10 electrons, the fluoride ion (F-) has 9 protons and 10 electrons, and neon (Ne) has 10 protons and 10 electrons. Despite having the same electron configuration (1s²2s²2p⁶), their properties differ due to the varying nuclear charge. A higher nuclear charge in isoelectronic species pulls the electron cloud more tightly, leading to a smaller ionic radius.

Isoelectronicity can also be observed in molecules and neutral atoms. For instance, carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen (N₂) are isoelectronic, both having 14 electrons. Understanding isoelectronic relationships helps in predicting and explaining trends in atomic and ionic radii, ionization energies, and other chemical properties across a series. It's a useful tool for chemists when analyzing and comparing different chemical species.
