Inductivists are proponents of a philosophical approach to knowledge acquisition known as inductivism. This method emphasizes the importance of observation and empirical evidence as the foundation for developing general theories or laws. The core idea is that by observing a sufficient number of specific instances of a phenomenon, one can infer a general conclusion that applies to all similar instances.

For example, an inductivist might observe that every swan they have ever seen is white. From these numerous observations of white swans, they might then inductively conclude that all swans are white. This conclusion is a generalization derived from specific instances. Inductivism suggests that scientific knowledge progresses through the accumulation of observations and the subsequent formation of hypotheses and theories that are then tested against further observations.

However, inductivism faces a significant challenge known as the problem of induction, famously articulated by David Hume. This problem questions the logical justification for inferring universal laws from a finite number of observations. There is no logical guarantee that future observations will conform to past ones. Therefore, even if all observed swans are white, it does not logically follow that all swans must be white, as evidenced by the discovery of black swans in Australia. Despite this philosophical critique, inductive reasoning remains a fundamental aspect of everyday thinking and scientific practice.
