Impulssinvälitys, or impulse transmission, refers to the process by which a nerve impulse travels along a neuron and is passed from one neuron to another, or to an effector cell like a muscle or gland. This communication is fundamental to the nervous system's ability to process information, coordinate actions, and maintain bodily functions.

The transmission of an impulse within a single neuron occurs electrochemically. When a neuron is stimulated, it generates an electrical signal called an action potential. This electrical impulse travels down the axon, a long projection of the neuron. At the end of the axon are specialized junctions called synapses.

At the synapse, the electrical signal is converted into a chemical signal. When the action potential reaches the axon terminal, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers, into the synaptic cleft, the small gap between neurons. These neurotransmitters diffuse across the cleft and bind to specific receptors on the membrane of the next neuron, called the postsynaptic neuron.

The binding of neurotransmitters to receptors can either excite or inhibit the postsynaptic neuron. Excitatory neurotransmitters make the postsynaptic neuron more likely to fire its own action potential, while inhibitory neurotransmitters make it less likely. This precise regulation of excitation and inhibition allows for complex neural circuits and sophisticated information processing. The process of impulse transmission is rapid and highly efficient, enabling the nervous system to respond quickly to internal and external stimuli.
