Immuunivälineeseen is a Finnish term that translates to "immune complex" in English. Immune complexes are formed when antibodies bind to antigens. Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system to neutralize foreign substances like bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Antigens are molecules found on the surface of these foreign substances, or they can be toxins released by them. When an antibody encounters an antigen it recognizes, it attaches to it, forming an immune complex.

These immune complexes play a crucial role in the immune response. Once formed, they are typically cleared from the body by specialized immune cells, such as phagocytes, which engulf and break down the complexes. This process helps to remove the threat posed by the antigen and prevents it from causing further harm.

However, if immune complexes are produced in excessive amounts or if their clearance mechanisms are impaired, they can accumulate in tissues and organs. This accumulation can trigger inflammatory responses, leading to tissue damage. Conditions where immune complex deposition causes disease are known as immune complex diseases. Examples include certain types of glomerulonephritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus. The location and extent of the damage depend on where the immune complexes lodge and the specific tissues involved.
