Immunprosesser refers to the complex and coordinated series of events that occur within an organism to protect it from harmful invaders. These invaders, known as antigens, can include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. The immune system's primary function is to identify these foreign substances, neutralize them, and develop a memory of them for future encounters.

This multifaceted defense system is broadly divided into two main branches: innate immunity and adaptive immunity. Innate immunity is the body's first line of defense and is non-specific, meaning it responds in the same way to any invader. It involves physical barriers like skin and mucous membranes, as well as cellular components like phagocytes (cells that engulf foreign particles) and natural killer cells. Inflammation, characterized by redness, swelling, heat, and pain, is a key component of the innate immune response, helping to recruit immune cells to the site of infection.

Adaptive immunity, on the other hand, is highly specific and develops over time. It is mediated by lymphocytes, specifically B cells and T cells. B cells produce antibodies, proteins that bind to specific antigens and mark them for destruction. T cells have various roles, including helping B cells produce antibodies (helper T cells) and directly killing infected cells (cytotoxic T cells). A crucial aspect of adaptive immunity is immunological memory, where the immune system "remembers" an antigen after initial exposure, allowing for a faster and more robust response upon subsequent encounters. This memory forms the basis of vaccination.
