Imat refers to a family of tyrosine kinase inhibitors. These drugs work by blocking the action of certain enzymes called tyrosine kinases, which are involved in cell growth and division. By inhibiting these enzymes, imatinib can slow down or stop the growth of cancer cells.

The most well-known imatinib drug is imatinib mesylate, marketed under the brand name Gleevec or Glivec. It was one of the first targeted cancer therapies to be approved and has been highly effective in treating certain types of leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). Specifically, it is used for Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and for unresectable, metastatic, or adjuvant gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) that are positive for KIT (CD117).

Imatinib works by targeting the abnormal BCR-ABL protein in CML and the mutated KIT protein in GIST. These proteins are crucial for the uncontrolled growth of these cancers. By blocking their activity, imatinib helps to control the disease.

While imatinib has revolutionized treatment for some cancers, it is not a cure for all. Like all medications, it can have side effects, which may include nausea, fatigue, fluid retention, and skin rash. The development of resistance to imatinib can also occur, leading to a need for alternative treatments. Research continues to explore new imatinib derivatives and combinations to overcome resistance and improve outcomes.
