Iltlambdasensorer, often referred to as lambda sensors or oxygen sensors, are critical components in modern internal combustion engines. Their primary function is to measure the amount of unburned oxygen present in the exhaust gases. This measurement is crucial for the engine control unit (ECU) to optimize the air-fuel mixture.

The sensor works by detecting the difference in oxygen concentration between the exhaust gas and the outside air. This difference generates a voltage signal, which is then interpreted by the ECU. If the voltage indicates too much oxygen, the ECU knows the mixture is lean (too much air), and it will increase the fuel injection. Conversely, if the voltage indicates too little oxygen, the mixture is rich (too much fuel), and the ECU will reduce fuel injection.

Maintaining an optimal air-fuel ratio, known as stoichiometry, is vital for several reasons. Firstly, it ensures efficient combustion, leading to better fuel economy and reduced emissions. Secondly, it allows the catalytic converter to function effectively, further reducing harmful pollutants like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and unburned hydrocarbons.

There are two main types of lambda sensors: narrowband and wideband. Narrowband sensors provide a simple binary output, indicating whether the mixture is rich or lean. Wideband sensors, on the other hand, offer a more precise measurement across a wider range of air-fuel ratios, which is particularly beneficial for high-performance engines or those designed for emissions control. Regular maintenance and inspection of lambda sensors are important for ensuring optimal engine performance and compliance with emission standards.
