Ilmastointijäähdytys, commonly referred to as air conditioning, is a process that involves the artificial cooling of air. It is typically used to keep an indoor space cooler and more comfortable than the outside air. This is achieved by removing heat and moisture from the air. The most common method of air conditioning involves a refrigeration cycle, which uses a refrigerant to absorb heat from the indoor air and then release it outdoors.

The basic components of an air conditioning system include a compressor, a condenser, an expansion valve, and an evaporator. The compressor compresses the refrigerant gas, increasing its temperature and pressure. This hot, high-pressure gas then flows to the condenser, which is typically located outdoors. Here, the refrigerant releases its heat to the outside air and condenses into a liquid. The liquid refrigerant then passes through an expansion valve, where its pressure and temperature drop significantly. Finally, the cold, low-pressure refrigerant flows to the evaporator, usually located indoors. The evaporator absorbs heat from the indoor air, causing the refrigerant to evaporate back into a gas. This cooled air is then circulated back into the room.

Air conditioning systems can vary in size and complexity, from small window units to large central systems that cool entire buildings. They are widely used in homes, offices, vehicles, and various other settings to provide thermal comfort and improve indoor air quality by controlling humidity. The energy consumption of air conditioning systems can be significant, leading to considerations of energy efficiency and environmental impact in their design and operation.
