Ilmamäärämittari, known in English as an air mass meter or mass airflow sensor (MAF sensor), is a component used in internal combustion engines to measure the amount of air entering the engine. This measurement is crucial for the engine control unit (ECU) to determine the correct amount of fuel to inject for optimal combustion. By accurately knowing the air mass, the ECU can maintain the correct air-fuel ratio, leading to improved engine performance, fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions.

There are several types of air mass meters, with the most common being the hot-wire and hot-film sensors. Both types operate on the principle that the amount of heat dissipated by a heated element is proportional to the mass of air flowing over it. A hot-wire sensor uses a heated wire, while a hot-film sensor uses a heated film. As air flows through the sensor, it cools the heated element. The ECU measures the electrical current required to maintain the element at a constant temperature, which in turn indicates the mass of air passing through.

A malfunctioning ilmamäärämittari can lead to various drivability issues. These can include rough idling, hesitation during acceleration, poor fuel economy, increased emissions, and even engine stalling. In some cases, a faulty sensor can trigger the check engine light on the dashboard. Regular maintenance and diagnostic checks can help identify problems with the air mass meter before they cause significant issues.
