The iliohypogastric nerve is a sensory nerve of the anterior abdominal wall. It originates from the dorsal division of the first lumbar nerve (L1). The nerve emerges from the lateral border of the psoas major muscle and then passes obliquely across the quadratus lumborum muscle. It then pierces the transversus abdominis muscle and the internal oblique muscle. As it approaches the anterior abdominal wall, it divides into two terminal branches: the lateral cutaneous branch and the anterior cutaneous branch.
