Ijsfasen refers to the different physical states or phases that water can exist in due to variations in temperature and pressure. The most common phase of ice is solid, which occurs when water freezes at or below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) at standard atmospheric pressure. This solid form of water is what we commonly recognize as ice, snow, or frost.

Above 0 degrees Celsius, water transitions into its liquid phase. This is the familiar state of water that fills rivers, lakes, and oceans. As the temperature increases further, the liquid water can transform into a gaseous state, known as water vapor or steam, typically above 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit) at standard pressure.

Beyond these common phases, under extreme pressure conditions, water can form various other solid crystalline structures known as high-pressure ice phases. These are not typically encountered in everyday life but are studied in specialized scientific fields. Conversely, under very low pressure, water can sublimate, transitioning directly from solid ice to water vapor without passing through the liquid phase.
