Ihmisverestä is the Finnish word for human blood. It is a vital connective tissue in the human body responsible for transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products. Blood circulates through the circulatory system, comprising arteries, veins, and capillaries.

The main components of human blood are plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Plasma is the liquid component, mostly water, carrying dissolved proteins, glucose, ions, and other substances. Red blood cells, or erythrocytes, contain hemoglobin, which binds and transports oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and carbon dioxide back to the lungs. White blood cells, or leukocytes, are part of the immune system, defending the body against infections and diseases. Platelets, or thrombocytes, are small cell fragments crucial for blood clotting, preventing excessive bleeding when a blood vessel is injured.

The average adult human has about 5 liters of blood. Blood type, determined by the presence or absence of specific antigens on the surface of red blood cells, is important for blood transfusions. The major blood groups are ABO and Rh systems. Understanding human blood is fundamental to medicine, enabling diagnosis, treatment of various conditions, and life-saving procedures like blood transfusions and organ transplantation.
