ibtida

Ibtida (ابتداء), also transliterated ibtida’ or ibtidaa, is an Arabic term meaning beginning or initiation. In linguistic usage, it refers to the act of starting a sentence, particularly the initial element of a nominal sentence (jumla ismiyya). The word is derived from the root ب-د-ء and functions as a masdar, signifying the concept of beginning.

In Arabic grammar, ibtida is closely connected to the mubtada’, the subject or topic of a nominal sentence, which is typically followed by the khabar (the predicate) that asserts something about the mubtada'. A sentence is usually formed as mubtada’ + khabar. For example: "الكتابُ مفيدٌ" (The book is useful). Here "الكتابُ" is the mubtada’ and "مفيدٌ" is the khabar. Other permissible mubtadas include demonstratives like "هذا" (this) or pronouns such as "أنا" in "أنا طالبٌ" (I am a student). The concept emphasizes the role of the opening element in signaling the topic and shaping the sentence’s meaning.

Ibtida also appears in discussions of classical Arabic syntax and morphology, where the rules governing mubtada’ and khabar are treated as foundational to understanding nominal sentences.
