Hypomania is a state of elevated mood and energy that is less severe than mania. It is characterized by a sustained period of abnormally elevated, expansive, or irritable mood, lasting at least four days. During this period, individuals may experience increased goal-directed activity or energy, increased talkativeness, flight of ideas or rapid speech, distractibility, increased involvement in pleasurable activities, and decreased need for sleep. Unlike mania, hypomania does not cause significant impairment in social or occupational functioning, nor does it require hospitalization.
